EQUESTRIAN BIO
Emily is an experienced equestrian and instructor who enjoys supporting the development of both horses and riders. Her experience working for top riders in the eventing, dressage, and show jumping worlds has given her the expertise to help riders of all ages gain confidence and develop foundational skills, as well as prepare young horses for careers in various disciplines.
Emily has worked for top event riders, including Courtney Cooper, Marcia Kulak, and Belgian Olympic rider, Karin Donckers. In 2010, Emily held a working student position with 5-star event rider Courtney Cooper at C-Squared Farm in Nottingham, PA. In addition to riding many upper-level event and dressage horses there, she competed her own horse, Dieter. Two years later, Emily worked and rode with top event rider, Marcia Kulak, in Wellington, Florida. In 2012, she rode and worked for 6-time Belgian Olympic event rider, Karin Donckers, in Belgium, including grooming for her at the Belgium Olympic selection trials for the 2012 London Olympics. She returned from the international experience with many new insights on preparing young horses and riders for the highest levels of performance.
Instructing since 2010, Emily has taught students of all ages and various skill levels. She is a graduate H-A (highest certification level for teaching and horsemanship) from the US Pony Clubs and has been invited as a clinician, visiting instructor, and/or certification examiner by Berks Pony Club (PA), Hidden Creek PC (PA), Lion Country PC (PA), Heron Mead PC Riding Center (PA), Lost Hounds PC (PA), Lake Shore PC (WI), Mendon PC (NY), and East Aurora (NY). Emily has spent two years as assistant instructor at Heron Mead Equestrian Center’s summer eventing camp (Bernville, PA) and spent two years providing instruction at Stone Mountain Farm (State College, PA) during her undergraduate at Penn State University. Her passion for teaching led her to pursue degrees in education, specifically a B.S. and M.S. in Agricultural Education (Penn State University & University of Georgia), enabling pedagogical theory to underpin her instructional approaches.
Emily’s early riding years began in Pony Club as a member of Berks PC, Eastern Pennsylvania Region. While actively participating in almost every pony club sport when she was younger, including show jumping, eventing, dressage, games, and polocrosse, her primary competition avenue has been eventing. Event rider, Kari Stenberg at Heron Mead Equestrian Center, introduced her to the sport in her early teens. Around the same time, she also began breaking and training young jumpers with Nick Edmunds at Hidden Pearl Farm, a Holsteiner breeding and hunter/jumper show barn, and continued to do so for several years. Of her own horses, she has restarted three OTTBs directly off the track and started three youngsters for careers in eventing and hunter/jumpers. She competed her two horses, Dieter and Lancelot, at the training/preliminary levels.
In addition to her current teaching and training activities, she is bringing along her recently started horse, Absolute Dream (aka 'Salute'), a young Westphalian gelding and upper level dressage prospect. In pursuit of future FEI dressage goals, she is currently training with Stephan Cheret of Dressage Sporthorses. Originally from Berks County, PA, Emily Urban Cordeiro moved to Ithaca, NY in 2019 to pursue a PhD in Soil and Crop Sciences while continuing to ride, train, and teach.
